New Haven - Hartford - Springfield

Commuter Rail Implementation Plan

Public meetings are coming up beginning Dec. 8th and the public is also invited to express their concerns through the CDOT website - (see below).

A list of meeting locations is available on the website.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has hired Wilbur Smith Associates to perform a feasibility study for the implementation of commuter rail service between New Haven, Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts. The corridor was identified as a key component in meeting the goals of improving and sustaining the regional economic viability and improving regional livability in the Capitol Region Council of Government’s (CRCOG) Regional Transit Strategy (RTS).  This was further recognized by the Connecticut Transportation Strategy Board as an important first step in implementing a statewide strategic plan and has allocated funding to undertake the implementation study.  In addition to serving commuters traveling between the towns and cities along the corridor, the service could provide a connection to Bradley International Airport, multiple links to Amtrak Intercity service and a direct link to the existing Metro North and Shore Line East Commuter Rail in New Haven.

Project Scope

In undertaking the feasibility study, the project team will evaluate eight different alternatives with varying levels of service, track configurations and station locations and enhancements.  Elements of the study include data collection, existing conditions analysis, future no build conditions assessment, development of ridership forecasts, alternative development and assessment, operating and capital plan, and financing needs.  The study will culminate with a Federal Transit Administration New Starts Grant Application.  An extensive public outreach process will include public informational meetings, an advisory committee, local official and stakeholder meetings, newsletters, and a project website.

Two highly informative PDF files are available below. The entire package - including all station drawings - can be found on their website: www.nhhsrail.com although at the time of this announcement the State DOT was having acknowledged trouble with that Internet location.  TRACKLESS TROLLEYS and BOSTON’S ARBORWAY LINE

An in-depth look into the history of one of the prime movers

of the Massachusett Transit Authority (MTA).

Mr. Paul Joyce has put together a terrific article along with a few

“oldies” photographs for our “on-line newsletter” readers.

The CTM has three of these critters discussed; #8483, 8488 & 8494 on the back '40 lot, at the moment, in somewhat less than pristine condition, awaiting restoration.

The WW&F Narrow Gauge RailRoad

We recently asked Mr. James Patten, webmaster of the WW&F web site, if he would care to put together a synopsis of his (favorite) RR for our CTM "online-newsletter" visitors. He has graciously done so on very short notice.

This is a Maine (USA) narrow gauge railroad that is growing each year in length and membership. I believe that you will enjoy his narrative and the many great photographs. Select any photo on the WW&F page to view the enlargement.
